Programming Assignment 1

Due Date: June 6, 2011 (Monday)

Objective:

Learn some existing software for manipulating images, video, and music. By the end of this assignment you should be familiar with the PC Lab equipment and know how to use Adobe Premiere [or equivalent], Photoshop [or equivalent], and music-manipulation software such as Cakewalk Pro Audio [or equivalent] and perhaps digital-audio manipulation software such as Adobe Audition [or equivalent], as well as other multimedia software.

Assignment:

  1. Capture (or find) at least three digital video files. You can either use a Digital Camcorder (or analog Camcorder or VCR to make your own, through Premiere) or download some from the net, or use your camera, etc.

  2. Compose (or edit) a small MIDI file with music-manipulation software.

  3. Create (or find) at least one WAV file. You may either digitize your own or find some on the net, etc. You might like to edit this digital-audio file using software such as Audition, Audacity, etc.

  4. Use Photoshop to create a title, and an ending.
  5. A useful feature in Photoshop --->

    Useful handout on how to digitize video using Adobe Premiere --->
    and... CSIL Handout on video capture using Microsoft Windows Movie Maker, VirtualDub, and WinTV2000 --->

  6. Combine all of the above to produce a movie about 60 seconds long, which should include a title, some credits, some sound tracks, and at least three transitions. Experiment with different compression methods; you are encouraged to use MPEG for your final product. We are very interested in seeing how the concepts in the class go over into the production of actual video.

  7. The above constitutes a minimum statement of the assignment --- some students get very creative, and that's fine; but don't go overboard and take too much time away from your other courses!

What to hand in:

  1. Hand in a short (3-5 pages) written report summarizing what you have done for your assignment:

  2. Sign up for a short demo (~ 5 minutes) to the TA in the lab on the due date.
