Latest Features of CSIL
Windows
Our Windows workstations in CSIL all run Windows 7. Our Windows servers run Windows Server 2008 R2
Ubuntu Natty (11.04) in CSIL
Our Linux workstations in CSIL are now running Ubuntu Natty (11.04) with a new look and feel. The default desktop environment is now Unity. If you prefer the classic Gnome desktop, please choose "Ubuntu Classic"
To provide a more stable working environment, your CSIL home directory remains on the local workstation. However, your SFU Home directory is auto mounted for you upon logon. You should keep your data on your SFU Home.
How to remote access to CSIL Linux (Ubuntu) machines via ssh?
1. ssh fraser.sfu.ca
2. ssh {linux_machines}.csil.sfu.ca -p 24
{linux_machines} is the hostname of Linux machines in CSIL.
Alternatively, you can try out the new CSIL Linux Terminal Server (Beta)
Hardware in CSIL
We standardize on Dell PCs for most of our student accessible workstations, with a goal of continuous replacement. Our objective is to selectively replace older, less-viable machines with newer models every few years. All of our displays are low-power consumption LCD panels. Click here for more details.
Windows Terminal Server in CSIL
CS Students can access our Windows software from off-campus via our Windows Terminal Server. Click here for more information.
Thin Client Workstations
In our continuous quest to upgrade our resources and make them more efficient, we've installed the Thinstation software from thinstation.org on some of our workstations in CSIL (Burnaby campus). This software will provide users with a number of features:
Connection to the CSIL Windows Terminal Server.
Connection to the CSIL Linux Terminal Server (beta).
Central Authentication Service (CAS)
Most of our secure services are accessible through CAS. What this means for you is that our secure services accept only your SFU ID and password, making the goal of a university-wide single sign-on closer.
CS Portal
We are actively writing Java-based applications for our students, staff, and faculty, offering them to our community through our CS Portal. These applications will be able to provide you with current information about classes and other administrative information.
The CS Calendar
We have a calendar application, accessible from the CS home page, so everyone can keep up to date with the events happening around the School.
Wikis for CS classes
We host wikis for both undergraduate and graduate courses. Course instructors may request that wikis be set up for their classes. We do not offer hosting for individual student wikis at this time.
The DDP
We make it easy for undergrad students to sign up for the Dual Degree Program (DDP). Study part time at SFU and part-time at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, and earn two degrees!
CSIL Virtualization
We are now taking advantage of virtualization technology for many of our CSIL servers, both on the Windows side and on Linux.
Subversion code repository server
Course Subversion repositories are created automatically for everyon. In addition, CS undergrad students can be set up by their instructors to access one or more group-access subversion repositories (think 2 or more team members working on a project together). See subversion FAQ for details.
CS graduate students can create their own repositoriesby following the intructions on the page: CS Personal and Course Subversion Repositories.
Free Microsoft software
CS students can get free copies of most Microsoft software for their home systems through the Microsoft Software Developer Network Academic Aliance (MSDNAA).
For more details, go to the CS Online Services page.
Home directory configuration in CSIL
When you login to Unix/Linux machines in CSIL, your default home folder is in /home/{username}. But, you should not use this folder or its sub-folders to save any important data.
You should alaway save files on your SFU campust home folder, which is:
/home/{username}/sfuhome
You could access SFU campus home folder by the command "mount.sfuhome" from Linux terminal session.
