How to Apply to the School of Computing Science Graduate Program at SFU

Graduate applications to the School of Computing Science at SFU are now carried out on-line. If for some reason you do not have access to a computer or the internet and cannot complete an on-line application, please contact our graduate admissions secretary at csgrada@cs.sfu.ca immediately.

An on-line application is initiated at the SFU Dean of Graduate Studies website. After obtaining an application ID, paying a fee, and entering the required information there, you will need to submit relevant supporting documents and have your referees submit their reports on you to the School of Computing Science On-Line Admission System. The details of the application procedure are provided below. Please read it carefully and also observe our application deadlines. Any inquiries should be directed to csgrada@cs.sfu.ca

Application Deadlines

The deadlines for receipt of completed applications (including all supporting documentation) are:

Starting Semester Deadline Date
Fall (September) February 1
Spring (January) August 1

Students are not generally admitted into the Summer semester.

The policy of the School is to admit the majority of students for the Fall semester.

Application Procedure

Please follow the steps below when applying to our M.Sc. or Ph.D. programs:

  1. Fill out an Application to Graduate School at the SFU Dean of Graduate Studies (DGS) website.

All potential graduate students must first apply to SFU. Please visit the SFU DGS site to initiate an application.

Note that you do not need to provide a Statement of Purpose or a list of referees at the Dean of Graduate Studies site. Instead, these should be provided to the School of Computing Science On-Line Admissions System; see below for more details.

  2. Pay an application fee of $75.00 CDN. Payment is required in order for us to start processing your application. Check out the SFU DGS site for more information.

  3. Arrange to have your official university transcript(s) sent directly to

    Graduate Admissions Committee
    School of Computing Science
    Simon Fraser University
    8888 University Drive
    Burnaby, B.C., Canada, V5A 1S6

by the degree-granting institution(s) that you have attended. This may take time so please act early.

  4. Submit your supporting documents to the School of Computing Science.

After you have completed your application at the SFU DGS website, it may take a few days for information entered there to be reflected on the School of Computing Science On-line Admission System. Once your application profile is established in our admission system, you will receive an email from us, instructing you to submit supporting documents.

Please log on to our admission system as instructed in the email and supply the contact information for your referees (this will initiate the automatic collection of referee reports). You will then have to submit the required supporting documents, which include the following:

    • A CV or resume
    • A statement of purpose (limited to one page), outlining your research plans
    • Electronic copies of your transcript(s)

You may submit optional supporting documents; see instructions provided within our on-line admission system. Note that we ask you to submit unofficial copies of your transcript(s) so as to facilitate our on-line reviews.

If you have completed steps 1, 2, and 3 above but have not received an email from our application system within five business days, please send an email to csgrada@cs.sfu.ca.

  5. Proof of English proficiency and GRE: Applicants who do not hold a degree from an accredited university in the United States or Canada are required to submit GRE (general test) and TOEFL (or IELTS) scores. Please note the minimum test scores we accept. If you are applying into the Ph.D. program, you may take either the General or the Subject GRE.

Note that IELTS, GRE and TOEFL scores need to be sent directly to the Registrar's Office by Educational Testing Service. The codes required are:

    • GRE = Institution Code 0999; Department Code = 0402
    • TOEFL=Institution Code 0999; Department Code=78

If you have already taken these tests and know your scores, you may report them on-line to speed up application reviews. Note however that the exam scores must be less than 2 years old to be considered and the official scores still need to be sent to us for record keeping and verification.

  6. Final reminder on original documents required: Please note that the originals of your official transcripts and proof of test scores are required before you can officially be accepted as a graduate student by the School of Computing Science at SFU.
