About Zhejiang University

Zhejiang University (ZU, 中国浙江大学)located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province was founded in 1897 and is reputed as "the East Cambridge". The University is consistently ranked in the top 5 universities in China. This comprehensive institution admits the top 3% of high school graduates from the country.

The University has six Campuses. It has a full-time student population of over 39,000, including more than 22,900 undergraduates, over 9,500 postgraduates working for master's degrees, and over 6,600 Ph.D. candidates.

SFU and ZU are international exchange program partners before the Dual Degree Program was established. The quality of ZU students has been outstanding; an example is the results of the 2004 ACM Programming Competition. An SFU team comprised of two ZU exchange students and one SFU student won second place in the competition's North-west Regional Finals that year, as well as qualifying for the World Finals in Shanghai.

Zhejiang University values diversity and international education. In 2007, the International College gave admission to more than 3,100 overseas students from more than 100 countries across the world in various short-term and degree programs.

About Hangzhou , China

Hangzhou - 杭州

Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang province with an area of 16,596 km2 (approximately 5.7 times bigger than Vancouver) and a population of 6.6 million. The city has a mild climate throughout the year with four distinct seasons. Hangzhou has a rich cultural heritage known for fine traditional products such as silk and the famous Longjing tea.

Hangzhou is located close to China's east coast and only 180 km southwest of Shanghai. Travel between the two metropolitan cities takes less than two hours by railway or highway. Many cities including Beijing, Xi'an, Guilin, and Hong Kong are all within easy reach by train or airplane.

Hangzhou continuously ranks second among all provincial capitals and ranks in the top ten among all medium-size cities in China on economic strength. Electronics and other light industries are among the many developing industries booming in Hangzhou. Examples of companies with presence in Hangzhou include Toshiba, which has its only overseas production plant for laptop computers established in the city, and Alibaba, the e-commerce/e-auction corporation with its headquarter in Hangzhou.

Hangzhou is named as one of the 7 ancient capitals in China and was the capital of China in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1129). In the Yuan Dynasty (1237-1368), Venetian explorer Marco Polo described Hangzhou as "the finest and most splendid city in the world."

Nowadays, Hangzhou remains a famous scenic city that attracts more than 20 million domestic and foreign tourists every year. Some of the attractions and historical sites include the Soul-Conceal Buddhist Temple, the Six-Harmony Pagoda, the Liangzhu Relics, and the four national museums - silk, tea, traditional Chinese medicine, and pottery. The West Lake, located in the heart of Hangzhou, has the most prominent historical and cultural status. The picture of "Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon", one of the scenic spots at the West Lake, was printed on the back of the fifth version of RMB one yuan bill issued in 2004, indicating the status of West Lake in China.
