Jiangchuan (JC) Liu is a Full Professor (with University Professorship) in the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, Canada. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of The Canadian Academy of Engineering, an NSERC E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellow, and a Fellow of IEEE.

I received BEng (Magna cum laude) from Computer Science at Tsinghua University in 1999, and PhD from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2003 (recipient of Hong Kong Young Scientist Award for the PhD work). From 2003 to 2004, I was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. I was a Microsoft Research Fellow and worked at Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) in the summers of 2000, 2001, 2002, 2007, and 2011. I was an EMC-Endowed Visiting Chair Professor at Tsinghua University and a Yue-Kong Pao Visiting Chair Professor at Zhejiang University, and am currently a Distinguished Guest Professor of Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (2022–). I also serve on the Advisory Committee of the Department of Computing at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Research Interests

I lead the NetMediaLab@SFU, which currently comprises 3 postdoctoral fellows, 14 PhD students, and 3 MSc students. I am broadly interested in networked intelligent systems that integrate multimodal sensing, media streaming, and computing. I have contributed to the development of several pioneering large-scale systems, including the world’s first million-user-scale live streaming system (CoolStreaming, INFOCOM'05; receiving the inaugural INFOCOM Test-of-Time Paper Award after 10 years); the first GPU-empowered cloud gaming platform over public virtualized cloud (Rhizome, MMSys'14); the first multi-hop backscatter sensing system (X-Tandem, MobiCom'18); and the world’s largest peer-to-peer content delivery network (PCDN) for video-on-demand (with ByteDance, ATC'24, TOCS'26). My current interests include but are not limited to I am also deeply committed to advancing these technologies in Mother Nature’s most complex and challenging environments. Together with our partners and my students, we develop and deploy innovative tools and systems for wildlife identification, tracking, and conservation, as well as for monitoring ecosystem dynamics and supporting natural-disaster preparedness and response. Our work is grounded in rigorous field studies, long-term data collection and analysis, interdisciplinary knowledge exchange, and extensive real-world deployment and validation, particularly in remote and underwater environments with little or no supporting infrastructure. A flagship initiative is SalmonVision. Over the past six years, in close partnership with biologists and First Nations communities, we have developed and deployed advanced AI-powered monitoring systems to support the restoration and conservation of wild salmon across the Pacific Northwest, from Alaska and Yukon through British Columbia to Washington and Oregon (see SFU Research Impact of the Week and CBC News).
